The Tower Chimes
The First Presbyterian
Church is blessed to have a set of chimes installed in a 47 foot tall redwood and steel
tower in the front of our Church. The tower contains (10) bells originally installed in
the belfry of the old stone church which stood on the property on which our Church is now
located. The chimes were originally played from a console located in a room below the
belfry. The church still owns the bell console and displays it in our Chapel Lounge.
The bells for the tower were made by the McShane Bell
Foundry of Glen Burnie, Maryland.
McShane Bell Foundry
The ten bronze bells were donated by Captain and Mrs.
Robert Dollar and were dedicated on December 13, 1914. each Bell is engraved with a verse
of Holy Scripture.
Bell 1 - "I was glad when they said unto me, let us
go into the house of the Lord."
Bell 2 - "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth
peace, goodwill toward men."
Bell 3 - "God is merciful to us and blesses us, and
causes his face to shine upon us."
Bell 4 - "Let the people praise Thee, O God; Yea, let
all the people praise Thee."
Bell 5 - "God shall bless us and all the ends of the
earth shall fear him."
Bell 6 - "In Thee, O Lord, do I put my trust, Let me
never be put to confusion."
Bell 7 - "Praise God from whom all blessings
flow."
Bell 8 - "I am the light of the world."
Bell 9 - "My faith looks up to Thee, Thou Lamb of
Calvary."
Bell 10 - "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will
give thee a crown of life."
The instrument, while frequently referred to as a carillon
is more accurately a chime. A carillon having a minimum of 23 bells. The chime is a
uniquely American adaptation of traditional European carillons.
Our organist plays the chimes from a small console located
next to the Moller pipe organ in the sanctuary.
In 1971, the chimes were removed from the belfry for the
demolition of the stone church. The chimes were safely stored for a later installation.
It was at a Christmas Eve Service in 1974 that then
Pastor, Dr. Griffin told the congregation to listen and they heard the chimes sounding
from the new bell tower. The tower was dedicated the following Easter.
