Are you interested in opportunities to ring
bells?
You do not have to be a member of the First
Presbyterian Church of San Rafael to be a welcomed member of the Sounds A'Pealing Bell
Choir.
There are also opporunities to ring
with smaller ensemble groups during the year. If one can not make a commitment to a
position in the full choir (or if one is not available), playing in ensembles or as an
alternate is still an excellent way to enjoy bell ringing.
We welcomed anyone with a strong interest and
commitment with just a very few qualifications.
- You must be able to attend practices on a
regular basis. We practice 1 1/2 hour per week (Monday evenings) from August through
mid-June. Individuals may practice additional times as needed for services and performances.
- You must be able to attend all playing opportunities, both
liturgical worship and
secular performances.
We provide music for worship services at the First Presbyterian Church at least once a
month. There are several concert opportunities each year, including the Christmas season.
- You need not be able to read music but it
helps. Some of the current members did not have strong musical backgrounds when they
started with the group, but they do now. Trained
musicians frequently comment on being humbled by their first attempts at ringing.
Non-musicians do well with their bell experiences in direct proportion to their desire to
succeed.
- You do need to have a sense of rhythm. Bells
are percussive by design.
